David Horowitz on the Attack -- Again
[I have slightly edited the following passed along by Sandi Cooper (replacing ?s with 's). It looks to me as though this attack will be as ugly as his previous ones. So far as I can tell the targets of Horowitz have been unjustly assaulted. This is McCarthy era stuff. And the scene in Israel is changing so rapidly -- hopefully with a light at the end of the tunnel there (?) to which one wishes his attention would re-divert -- the relative wisdom of his supporting Likud v. the new Sharon party. Unhappily I saw from one of our B.C. student papers read on the subway home last night that some of our Brooklyn students have been entangled in the Horowitz spider web.
My wife and I attended, as the student editors of our respective papers at Sarah Lawrence and Yale, the last gasp blast rally on behalf of McCarthy at Madison Square Garden ("One Million Americans for McCarthy") in 1955. It was quite a show with Buckley looking uncomfortable on the platform with a retired general or so and what they then used to designate as "little old ladies in tennis shoes". The crowd was ugly. At one point the noted Life photog, Lisa Larson was grabbed by two cops and dragged -- not out of the place -- but pointedly past the podium while the crowd shouted "Kill the Communist!" My then fiancee and I were circulating on the floor as press when another group pointed at her and started shouting "Kill the communist!" I moved her to the opposite side of the podium quickly out of their sight. We did our stories in our respective student papers and mine brought in one of Buckley' typical nasty personal attacks, employing showoff Latin obscenities all too typical of his style then as the principal founder of right wing America -- those think tanks funded by Scaife billionaire types -- Manhattan Institute, Hoover, Free Enterprise, etc., etc.
I imagine this one will blow away along with the Bush administration fiasco. The U.S. is not yet ready for neo fascism and hopefully will never be. We have periodically had such efforts in the past -- Father Coughlin prior to WW2 tragically moved from social reform to support for Hitler:

And, no, we faculty do not punish our students for their political views. We try to present them with the facts as best we can and urge them to decide what is the right thing to do.
