Better Financial Support for College Students!

[One of the horrors for both students and their families has been the escalating costs of a college education which through the shift over to funding by personal loans has left both students and their families heavily indebted. Hopefully the Democrats can begin to reduce the trend of lowering public support for higher education and dumping the burdens of financing it on individuals. The Republican mentality that had produced this trend away from public funding has been based in the misconception that only the only individuals who receive higher educations are its beneficiaries. Nothing could be further from the truth:

1) The U.S. is now more than ever engaged in global economic competition with nations that DO see the importance of educating their citizens to gain an edge. How often does one call some institution and find that one is talking to India or find that products purchased come from China rather than being produced in the U.S.?

2) The U.S. is suffering from a scarcity of people trained and willing now to enter public service professions such as teaching where the lack of adequate governmental funding makes salaries low and conditions unattractive. This shortsightedness about proper funding of the things we need to be a competitive and caring society are sabotaging the interests of all of us. May the Democrats begin to restore the rights things to do with our public funds -- fewer wars and more public services desperately needed! Ed Kent]
