Right Wing Schizophrenia?

Conservative Groups Rally Against Gonzales as Justice
By ADAM NAGOURNEY, TODD S. PURDUM and DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK
Conservative groups have warned President Bush that
nominating his attorney general would splinter conservative
support.

The puzzling aspect of the Republican alliance of conservatives -- the greedies and the nut cases (or should I politely call them libertarians and religious rightists) -- is how they have managed thus far to stay on message -- supporting the Bush administration. It might just be the nomination of the next Supreme Court Justice that could blow this unholy cabal apart. The greedies presumably are on to minimizing taxes while maximizing their wealth, while the religious rightists are bent on criminalizing offenses violating their personal moral codes -- homosexuality, abortion, medical uses of embryos, stem cell research, cloning, whatever. It may be difficult to find in one package a libertarian/anti-libertarian religious fanatic.

Bush might be bailed out if Rehnquist would only resign pronto. Then he could nominate one of each. However, this deep split in the ideologies of the right is one that we Democrats should be exploiting to the hilt -- and while we are at it pressing for appointments of Supreme Court justices who respect both the Constitution and human rights!
