I assume that academics in particular are targets of such things -- or at least were during the Viet Nam anti-war period. I all too well recall the FBI guys who would drop by to check up on students for whom I had written recommendations at Vassar back when. Of late I have had only one query from a NYPD sergeant in the Bronx with a query about a posting in which I had used the subject heading, "Beware the Idea of March." We ended up agreeing that the Iraq war was pure madness. I think any of us who has had any connection with the military (I was getting ready to go via NROTC training when Ike happily ended off the Korean war. Where is a comparable Republican when we need him -- that damned "military-industrial complex" about which he warned us which is all too manifest in the Halliburton (Cheney) rip-offs of our tax dollars over there) know how mad the current Bush and Co. incursions are into the Middle East with what terrible costs and horrendous results? All those lives -- Americans reported and Iraqi not?
