The Not Permitted Words

Those of us who care about peace are well aware of the not permitted words -- Nazi, Apartheid, etc. in describing some of the tactics that Israel has adopted to control its occupied territories. Sad this is. I all too well recall the Israeli scholar defending "preventive detention" as an Israeli tactic at the Columbia Human Rights seminar some decades ago when Israel first started imprisoning Palestinians in violation of due process rights on the basis that security considerations precluded disclosure of incriminating facts. He assured us not to worry. No more than half a dozen or so individuals would be affected and their cases would be reviewed each six months. This was, of course, the tactic of South Africa at that time. Now Israel has incarcerated some 9,000+ Palestinians including women and children. It assassinates regularly with wider losses of lives. The killing ratio runs 3 Palestinians for each Israeli. And peace is further off than it was back then. How tragic for all.
