Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said Iran and Iraq have a common responsibility to restore peace and security in the region.

In a meeting with the visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, President Ahmadinejad described Iraq's current climate as very critical, saying Tehran maintains Iraq's future depends on the victory of the Iraqi people.

The President acknowledged Iraqi government's efforts to bring back security to the country and plan a promising future for its people.

“Today the Iraqi nation is proceeding on the right path. One which has been opposed by the enemies of the country,” he said.

Ahmadinejad noted that “those who have sold their souls to the enemy are against the national dignity and self-esteem of the Iraqis.”

President Ahmadinejad praised the Iraqi nation for its endeavors to maintain independence and set up a free government.

The Iraqi Prime Minister, for his part, said the Islamic Republic has played a constructive and positive role to help restore security in Iraq and fight against terror.

He added, “Terrorists want to dominate our political, economic and cultural capacities, but we will foil their plots.”

The Iraqi senior official hoped that the massacre of defenseless civilians would end in the near future.

Stressing the importance of interactions between Tehran and Baghdad, al-Maliki said he was pleased to see that Iran is ready to contribute to the reconstruction of Iraq.

Al-Maliki is to meet with the Iranian Vice-President Parviz Davoudi and discuss the obstacles to a number of construction projects.
