9/11 Revisited

None of us New Yorkers will ever forget this date, where we were, and what we were doing when the terrible news came through. My wife had gone down there for a meeting -- but she is never early anywhere and was just coming out of the subway when the first plane hit. She was able to walk out with a friend without even getting dusted. But we could not reach each other until she could get to a pay phone at 14th St. -- all cell phone communication had been knocked out.

The next several months all of us passing by in the subway, as I did on my way to teach in Brooklyn, smelled the stench which we knew also included the burning bodies buried under the debris. And for months thereafter when the planes, as occasionally happens, were rerouted over Manhattan, we listened apprehensively.

All of us, I guess, realize, that we are still the #1 target for another major terrorist attack as the major financial center of the nation. There is no particular protection for us. Our subways are open to attack. Our bridges and tunnels are not secure. We hope for the best and that we will not be the ones by chance targeted. Needless to say each 9/11 is worrisome.
