C.I.A. Pionreered Torture -- Been There and Felt It!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Ajax
And I and and number of my fellow grad students back in that period (late 50s) know exactly how it felt to be tortured, as we were C.I.A. guinea pigs with some of the lesser techniques. We experienced such things as sensory deprivation over extended periods, the frigid water tactic along with electric shock and burning on our bodies. They tried drugs such as LSD on some of us. Personally I survived okay, but some of those in the batch with me came flying out of our confinement capsules (so they told me) in a state of shock with the wires to which they had been attached dangling behind them. My particular pain tester had a heavy German accent (I speak the language) which made me wonder whence he had come! Worst of all these tests (as torture now) were administered by professional psychologists (or so they said).
In my case I was in and out for only 48 hours and I could have burst out of the capsule at any time I wished. We were even being paid -- $1.00 per hour which was enough to bring in struggling grad students. I can't imagine how it would feel to be trapped? All that I suffered as a consequence was some loss of hearing from the loud roar in my ears to stifle sensory contact during those 48 hours -- and some residual rage at types who authorize and carry out such despicable things. Ours are criminals who have violated the Constitution (Eighth Amendment on "cruel and unusual punishment") and one of the two absolute NO! NO! provisions of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948 (Article 5. "No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment").
From top to bottom, those who have authorized and/or administered torture are criminals and should be prosecuted as such! Ed Kent]
