"Last Stand" [Seymour Hersch in 10 July New Yorker]

[Will the Bushies be able to distract the U.S. public's attention away from the mounting security hazards -- chaos in Afghanistan and Iraq stimulating terrorism rather than diminishing it and some REAL WMD threats from Iran and North Korea? Needless to say we are stretched thin both militarily and with budget and trade gaps growing while the Republicans continue to insist on tax cuts for their wealthy supporters and cuts in basic services for the rest of us -- particularly students and young families struggling under ever increasing debts. Expect some graphic distraction items combined with vicious attacks on critics -- the rest of us again. Do you know Bush's 7 recommendations for Constitutional Amendments? Ed Kent]

Seymour M. Hersh reports on the military’s problem with Bush’s Iran policy. Inside the Pentagon, senior commanders have increasingly challenged the President’s plans, according to active-duty and retired officers and officials. The generals and admirals have told the administration that the bombing campaign will probably not succeed in destroying Iran’s nuclear program. They have also warned that an attack could lead to serious economic, political, and military consequences for the United States.
