Re: Our Axis of Incompetents -- Bush, Blair, and Olmert
When targeting a subject in a blog one cannot, as in an article or book, take into account all the subtexts and qualifications. However, a critic led me to respond to some of my oversimplifications in the original which I pass along here in part:
Dershowitz has gone over the edge -- suggesting that Carter is bought by the Saudis -- a bit ironic that charge, given the Bush family links there and blindness to the Saudi support of the Sunnis in Iraq, etc.
Israel was attacked, but not by Lebanon against which it launched a massive destructive counter attack against its infrastructure and on-going life -- those cluster bombs and rockets fired at civilian targets. It was Hezbollah that was the enemy of Israel and Israel's incarcerations, etc. are not so innocent -- which were the pretext for the mini-attack that started things. That aside you admit that the war was badly managed by Olmert -- encouraged by Bush to massively counter attack. And then you have Avigdor Lieberman and Netanyahu lurking in the wings, as we have Giuliani -- our media-made terrorism hero?
The Afghan war has been a disaster because our pursuit of the terrorists was not our primary target. We also intervened clumsily and destructively, leaving chaos now as the end result. Presumably those democracies will last as long as U.S. troops are being used to maintain and direct them. Some might call them puppet governments? We are into killing Taliban who happen to be 98% from the largest ethnic group there (Pashtuns) and now with sanctuary in Pakistan where they are also the largest ethnic group, there is no way to defeat them as the rest of the NATO countries now recognize -- leaving Bush and Co holding the bag or should I say trying to shut up Pandora's box which they have opened up there. And g-d save us all if Musharraf is assassinated. Anything can emerge from a Pakistan eruption with nuclear weapons -- the real 'nuculer' threat over there.
The rest of the story is the ugly result of the Coalition of the Willing which is withering fast -- even the British looking to move out and Australia likely to do so with a change of government there.
If you cannot see the daily slogans being pumped out by the Bush operation, then I cannot help you.
And not all those who criticize Israel are accused of being self-hating Jews or anti-Semites. But my fear is that the abuses being committed by Israel will over the long run induce precisely that. Goliath has had bad press ever since.
