F.B.I. Head Admits Mistakes in Use of Security Act

[Hopefully the new Congress will take on this travesty of violations. Not since the J. Edgar Hoover era have we seen such untrammeled violations of privacy. I would hate to see my own record -- I was being interviewed by the FBI on students from the time I first started teaching at Vassar College in 1963. Then they suddenly stopped. Needless to say my criticisms of our current neocon travesties and contacts with people over there are prone to simple-minded scrutiny. When I posted a critical comment on the lack of protection of our subways from attacks with the subject heading, "Beware the Ides of March" (it was about this time of year), I got a call from a guy identifying himself as a Bronx police sergeant wondering whether I had anything specific in mind. We ended up agreeing that our subways are wide open -- and still are. Those irritating and oft repeated messages about reporting anything suspicious to someone are about as effective as the abstinence approach to HIV. Growl! Ed Kent]
