Watch for Bush's Welcome to Colombia

Had Bush had a decent education at Yale, he would know of the extensive and murderous interventions by the U.S. which forestalled the development of independent democracies in Latin America -- including most recently a coup attempt in 2002 against Hugo Chavez who has become Bush's current nemesis down there. These interventions were largely staged in the interest of American corporations operating there or simply grabs of territories from such as Spain, e.g. Teddy Roosevelt.

which engineered the expulsion of Jacobo Arbenz Guzmán from the presidency of Guatemala in 1954 -- which has suffered the killings of hundreds of thousands in the subsequent chaos there.

However, the uglier and more recent things involved our support, direct or indirect, of the military juntas that murdered many thousands in the 1970s and 1980s of young people (often college students) and others, including dumping them into the oceans from helicopters on high -- while still alive.

Needless to say the U.S. has many an apology to make and contrary to Bush's claim of economic generosity, Latin America, too, is low on our foreign aid list which is the lowest per capita globally of the prosperous industrialized nations. Selling arms to repressive regimes is, however, the other side of this story of the Americas -- which now makes us less loved than ever. Watch Bush's greeting in Colombia where we are pumping in vast sums to suppress the resistors there and which is now apparently funding right wing death squads as well:

The sad thing here is that such readily available information is so little known to Americans generally. Had I not had a first rate high school history teacher and exchange studies in Britain early on, I would have been among the dumbed down, too.
