Speak Up Now -- Or Don't Complain Later!
I have posted some 70 links covering all possible positions on this topic. It is sad to see how few Americans feel free to comment candidly on the conflict. And our pols are thoroughly intimidated by some of the more aggressive Israeli propaganda outfits which attack any critics of Israel as anti-Semites (or self-Hating Jews if they happen to be Jewish). Needless to say the rest of the world does not share this bias and Israel stands to lose over the long run not only against the Muslim states in the Middle East, but also the European and other nations as well. A call to boycott Israeli universities emanates from Britain.
Personally I happen to be of the generation that remembers the Holocaust as a nightmare event of my childhood. I can understand some of the Israeli intransigence. But more is at work there in the brutal treatment of Palestinians -- a spectrum running from the settler extremists who assassinated Rabin to greedies who happily accept the extensive U.S. aid which in effect subsidizes and provides military protection for settler expansion into Palestinian lands. The barrier is a prime example of this contemptuous attitude. It does not mark boundaries. Rather it grabs Palestinians farmlands, etc., etc.
If our pols are running for cover -- and I cite as a Democrat postings on two of ours -- Obama and Clinton -- below. The rest of us must speak out candidly on behalf of real peace there. Anything less risks a second Holocaust down the line when one or another of the angered states unleashes an apocalyptic attack. Iran alone is not the only hazard. Pakistan has nuclear weapons and the wherewithal to direct them at Israel were radicals to gain the ascendancy there. Can you imagine Israel and Pakistan launching a barrage of nuclear missiles at each other? And so would go the Middle East and much of the rest of the world. Remember the Chernobyl disaster which spread nuclear laden winds across much of Europe!
