Frat Boys Torture, Too

One of the built in features of fraternities in this country is the practice of torturing pledges (and others available for same). I am all too aware of this feature, as my father had been a frat member at Yale and retained his heavy wooden frat paddle which he tried out on me as a very young child until I rebelled -- disgusting practice!

Bush's only apparent accomplishment at Yale was managing as a non athlete himself (presumably by looking deeply into their souls and inventing a nickname for them) to get himself elected president of the major Yale jock frat, DKE, against which I editorialized when one of its disgusted members told me of its annual practice called "pig night" when pledges were sent out to find "ugly townie girls" to be invited to a big Yale party -- at midnight they were told, now illegally liquored up, that they had been invited as the worst pigs that could be found, then dismissed into the New Haven winter.

It is no small surprise that Bush has apparently authorized torture as a tactic for extracting information from alleged terrorists. Contempt for those upon whom one can inflict pain seems to be an ingrained characteristic of the Bush administration. Fraternity pledges all too frequently die when they are put through these frat routines. What if an occasional enemy complains about a bit of such hazing?
