Lest Columbia Feel Picked On
Most of our big Ivy privates have a dark side of the soul. The term "sexual harassment" was coined to characterize what Cornell was permitting its faculty and frats to do to its students back when. One of the counselors in this area there with a joint appointment in Law and Philosophy was so disgusted that he moved to Boston University -- even under Silber (one of my Yale teachers who was quite an experience from hell for an undergraduate even then).
Yale back in our days -- Jesse was a year behind me and also went on to a career at CUNY -- was a mix of caring people -- many of us in philosophy -- and the drunken frat characters heading for Wall St., corporate jobs and Republican Party positions who specialized in raping Smithies (Mountain Day) and Vassar students (I was a house fellow there dealing with the aftermath -- one of our students had to walk home 10 miles in the wee hours to escape a car load of them). Not all that infrequently the Republican pols have ended up doing time in federal prisons. Yale, as Jesse details, has produced some of our most brutal Republican officials of recent years.
Read Jesse's report on the bad old days and cringe. I think Bush's transcript website is there somewhere. No he did not get and 'B' in international relations. He got only one B- in his whole time at Yale -- too busy running for the presidency of DKE, the Yale frat that specialized in Pig Night against which I editorialized and on which Jesse reports here.
